White bar soap or a few drops of dish soap mixed in warm water and blotted on with a tea towel is all you need. Spot cleaning is for recent spills on a small part of your carpet. Some rugs are better at repelling stains than others depending on the type of fabric.
Then rinse the rug by dabbing a wet cloth on it. Allow the solution to sit on. You can use a 2 1 dish soap water solution to remove and disinfect food or drink spills.
To clean your rug blot spills with a clean white towel and scrape up solid debris as soon as you can. Then if you re dealing with mud or a mild stain vacuum your rug. Work the cleaner into the rug and let it sit for several minutes.
